Through the Google Home assistant via the Google Home Mini speaker, you can control your music listening on Spotify with voice commands! Ask Google Home Mini to play a song, an album, a public playlist or one of your own private playlists. Google Home Mini works quite well with Spotify, giving you access to all your specific Spotify account content, just by asking.

For this list of Google Home Mini Spotify commands to work, you first must link your Google account to your Spotify Premium account.

Hey all, so as some of you may know, Spotify is having a promotion where they are giving out free google home minis for new or existing Spotify premium users on a single-person plan. Now, on April 10th, I redeemed this and I was given a link to place my order for the google home, free of charge. For a while last year, Spotify was giving away free Google Home Mini speakers to its Spotify Premium for Family subscribers. Now, it’s bringing back the offer and extending it to individual. Spotify is giving away free Google Home Mini speakers to Premium members until November 15, or until supplies last. Follow these steps to get yours.

Google Home Mini Spotify Commands List

Whether playing albums, songs, playlists, or genres, you can control playback with the following Google Home Mini Spotify commands.

  • Hey Google, mute.
  • Hey Google, silence. These commands set speaker volume to zero. But playback progress continues.
  • To undo these and raise the volume again, use the Google Home volume commands, such as: Hey Google, set volume 40, or Hey Google, raise volume, et al. You can also tap the sides of the Mini to raise and loser volume from that speaker.
  • Hey Google, stop. Stops Spotify playback.
  • OK Google, quiet.
  • Hey Google, be quiet.
  • OK Google, shut up.
  • Hey Google, pause. Stops playback, but does not change the volume setting. Nor does playback within the current track continue. Stops playback. Say Hey Google, resume to undo the stop
  • Hey Google, resume. Picks up playback again from where you left off when you issued the last pause command.
  • OK Google, play Spotify. Plays music from Spotify, although not necessarily what you were listening to during your last listening session.
  • Hey Google, what’s playing? She’ll then speak the currently playing song title and artist.

Got a favorite artist or group? Ask Google Home to play all the songs by that artist that Spotify has, as in the following examples. Here, the following Google Home Mini Spotify commands all result in the speaker playing songs by the Steve Miller Band.

Caution

If the artist name you’re requesting is also a popular title of a song (the group name Middle of the Road for example, is also the title of a popular 1984 song by the Pretenders), then the Mini may again, play the wrong song. To get rid of this confusion, just add the “songs by” phrase to the Google Home Mini spotify commands, as in the next examples.

Google Home Mini Spotify Commands to Play a Genre

Just ask for the genre you wish, and Mini will play a bunch of songs from that genre. No telling what you’ll get though, unless you’ve already tried this once so that you know what’s coming. Also, what you’ll hear will change from play to play, as they add new music.

Spotify Play Genre Request Examples

  • OK Google, play some jazz on Spotify.
  • Hey Google, play popular music on Spotify.
  • Hey Google, play country music on Spotify.
  • OK Google, play dance music on Spotify.
  • Hey Google, play 90s music on Spotify.

Google Home Mini Spotify Commands to Play a Song by an Artist

Got a favorite song by a certain artist? Ask the Mini to play that song with the following Google Home Mini Spotify commands. The requests below all play the song Fly Like an Eagle, by the Steve Miller Band.

Caution

You may omit the artist name from the request, if no other song title, artist name, or playlist has the same name. But you must add the artist qualifier if there are more than one items in Spotify with the same name. If you don’t, you may get the wrong song. In the Fly Like an Eagle scenario though, she does play the Steve Miller version, even though versions from other artists such as Seal are also on Spotify.

Spotify Song Title by an Artist Request Examples

  • Hey Google, play Fly Like an Eagle by the Steve Miller Band on Spotify.
  • Hey Google, play the Steve Miller Band, Fly Like an Eagle on Spotify.
  • OK Google, play Fly Like an Eagle on Spotify.
  • Hey Google, play Spotify, Fly Like an Eagle.
  • Hey Google, play Spotify, Steve Miller Band, Fly Like an Eagle.

Google Home Mini Spotify Commands to Play a Certain Album

You can request a specific album by a specific artist from Spotify, as shown in the examples next. The requested album then plays, in the correct order, from beginning to end.

You may also omit artist / group names for albums with unique names. But to ensure that you hear what you wanted, we always request the album along with the artist, since many albums in Spotify have the same names these days, and since we almost always get the wrong version of the song when we don’t.

Caution

But you may hear a short silence (inter-song gaps) in those albums that feature one long continuous recording, that’s subdivided into tracks for easier navigation (such as live albums or certain studio recordings like Pink Floyd’s The Wall album). The Alexa speakers on the other hand, provide truly gapless playback of these albums. So check those out if you really need gapless album playback on Spotify.

Asking for track numbers within the album does not yet work.

  • OK Google, play Fly Like an Eagle album by Steve Miller Band on Spotify.
  • Hey Google, play Steve Miller Band, the album Fly Like an Eagle on Spotify.
  • OK Google, play Steve Miller Band, Fly Like an Eagle, the album, on Spotify.
  • Hey Google, play the album Fly Like an Eagle, by the Steve Miller Band on Spotify.
  • Hey Google, play the album Fly Like an Eagle on Spotify.

Here, we cover how to unlink Spotify from Google Home speaker devices. You may wish unlink (remove, delete) your Spotify account from a Google Home Speaker because either:

  • You’ve cancelled your Spotify subscription, and just want to get rid of its remnants from your Google Home app settings, to minimize clutter.
  • You’re giving the device to your parent, and wish to prevent him / her from learning what you listen to on Spotify. Yet you still wish to allow access to other music services set up on your Google account.
  • You like different versions of music than what Spotify offers, and so, you temporarily wish to remove Spotify from your list of searchable music sources. Then, the songs you request will not be found by Google Home on Spotify, but instead, on one or more of your other active music services, which DO offer your desired song versions.

How to Unlink Spotify from Google Home: First Considerations

These unlink instructions assume that you’ve previously set up and linked a Spotify account to your Google Home assistant. If you have not, then you do not yet require this information. But if so, then read on.

So, to get your tablet ready for this work, be sure the Google Home app has been installed and linked to the Google account on which the Spotify account you wish to unlink is configured. Then, perform the following instructions:

How to Unlink Spotify from Google Home

1. Find the Google Home App on your Tablet

On our iOS based iPad, this app is located on page three of the home screen, as illustrated in the next picture by the pink arrow.

2. Run the Google Home App

Tap the Google Home app icon on the tablet home screen. After a short pause, the app displays itshome screen, as shown next.

3. Tap the Hamburger Link

Located in the top left corner of the home screen, as pointed at by the pink arrow in the previous picture. The Google Home app then displays its main menu, as shown next.

4. Tap the Music Link on the Main Menu Screen to Continue with How to Unlink Spotify from Google Home

Free Google Home Spotify

Find this link, pointed at by the pink arrow in the just previous picture. The Music Service Choices screen then appears, as shown below.

5. Tap the Unlink item in the Music Services list for Spotify

This is shown in the previous picture.

Free Google Mini Spotify

Then, you get the Spotify Unlink Confirmation screen as shown next.

Google

6. Finally, tap the UNLINK Button

Find that in the confirmation window shown above, as pointed at by the pink arrow. This removes your Spotify account information from the Google Home app and associated speaker devices, and then returns you to the Music Service Choices screen, as displayed in the next step.

If however, you encounter an error message, someone else, who shares your Google account, may have already deleted your Spotify profile from it for you. If concerned, check with anyone who has access, just to be certain that the information was not removed due to any sort of security breach.

7. Check that the Google Spotify Music Service is Now Unlinked from your Spotify Account

On the Music Service Choices screen, find the Spotify entry and look just beneath it. If you see a blue LINKoption, then your Spotify account information has indeed been successfully purged from Google Home. See the next picture for the location of that link, as indicated by the pink arrow.

However, if this link still displays as UNLINK, then the information was not properly removed. In that case, jump back up to step 1, and try running through this procedure again, paying close attention to any error messages that might appear along the way.

You can also verify that your Google Home speaker no longer plays music on Spotify, by requesting a song through it, from Spotify. For example, try something like

Spotify Get Google Home Mini

“Okay Google, play Christmas Medley by Neil Diamond on Spotify.”

If your Spotify profile has successfully been removed from the Google Home assistant, she’ll say back,

“Your music account needs to be linked first. You can do that in the Google Home app.”

8. Done with How to Unlink Spotify from Google Home!

But if you experience a change of heart, and would like to reinstate Spotify streaming on your Google smart speakers, then simply add back your Spotify account info into Google Home.

Enjoy!
