3 Ways to Change Spotify Playlist Cover Image on Mobile

According to Spotify, you need the Spotify Desktop app to change Spotify playlist cover image, but many people, myself included, want to do that on mobile phones. After some researches, I finally find 2 ways to switch Spotify playlist cover photo to any photo that I have on both Android and iOS.

From the Spotify Developer Doc, you can easily find how to upload any image as Spotify playlist cover, so you can use the Shortcuts app for iOS to achieve it with Spotify API. If you are using iOS 13, the Shortcuts is pre-installed on your iPhone or iPad.

If you read the Doc, you can find the Spotify Authentication process is a little complicated. I have made a shortcut to convert Apple Music playlist to Spotify. Luckily, you don’t have to go through the whole process thanks to a free app called Shortcutify. Once you have the Shortcutify app installed, you can see how it works referring to the video or steps below.

Step 1. Go to developer.spotify.com and login with your Spotify account.

Step 2. Under the Dashboard tab, click “Create a Client ID”. Give it a name and other info.

Step 3. Click Edit Setting for this Client ID. Add “shortcutify://oauth-callback/spotify” as the Redirect URL and then Save the Settings.

Step 4. Open Shortcutify app on your iPhone or iPad and select Spotify. Enter your Client ID and Client Secret in the form and tap “Connect”.

Step 5. Open this link in Safari to get the shortcut (iOS 13 only) for changing playlist cover image.

Step 6. Run this shortcut to select any picture from your Camera Roll to set as playlist image. If the selected image is not square, this shortcut will crop it automatically.

This Shortcutify app is only available for iOS 13 or later versions. If you are using iOS 12, you have to do the whole authentication process within Shortcuts app.

Update: Some people told me that this shortcut not working for iOS 14, so I have updated this shortcut by removing the fancy menu. If you are using iOS 14, you can get this shortcut instead.

Change Spotify Playlist Picture on Android

For Android users, there is a free dedicated app for switching Spotify playlist image. It is called Change playlist image – Spotify. You can search and download it from Google Play Store. It is totally free.

Once you installed this app, it will ask you to login with your Spotify account and agree to grant access to this app. After that, you will see all your Spotify playlist. just select one that you want to edit the cover image.

In the next screen, you can tap on “Edit” to change the playlist name and description or “Choose Image” to select any image on your Android phone as the playlist cover image. You can also rotate the image if needed.

If you don’t want to get any app installed, you can also use an online web tool to edit Spotify playlist image. Since it an online tool, you can use it on Chromebook, Windows PC, Mac, Linux PC, or any device with a web browser.

You just go to this web page. It will ask you to login with your Spotify account and authorize like the previous 2 methods. After that, you can select your playlist to change the cover image as you like.

These are the 3 ways to change Spotify playlist image without the Spotify desktop app for real. You can also change the first 4 tracks in a playlist to change the cover image.     Note: You need to allow Spotify to find devices in the prompt that shows.
  5. Download the playlist with your local files.

  • Your device is up-to-date
  1. Click , then Settings.
  2. Scroll to Local Files and switch Show Local Files on.
  3. Switch off any sources you don't want.
  4. Click ADD A SOURCE to select another folder.

Music from that folder is now in Local Files in the menu on the left.

Supported file types

Note: Some of your files may be protected in restricted formats. Install QuickTime on your computer to allow most of these tracks to be played on Spotify.

  • .mp3
  • .m4p (unless it contains video)
  • .mp4 (if QuickTime is installed on your computer)

The iTunes lossless format (M4A) isn't supported.
